With autonomic testing, we refer to problems occurring within your ANS as autonomic neuropathy. As your neuropathy doctor in Vienna, Dr. Jaligam dedicates time to helping you uncover the cause of these problems. If you suffer from the following conditions, it may be time to come in for a visit. Certain medications can also cause damage to your ANS. During your appointment, it is vital to disclose the full extent of your medical history. This includes any medications you are currently taking.
We conduct a series of exams in our autonomic testing procedure. We base our tests on symptoms unique to the state of your ANS. We design the testing sessions to focus on getting to the root cause of your problem. You may experience the following tests:
- Deep breathing test: A deep breathing test measures your heart rate. We place electrodes on your chest and a blood pressure cuff on your finger. Dr. Jaligam uses the electrodes and the blood pressure cuff to record your heart rate. Once testing has started, you take slow, deep breaths for at least one minute.
- Valsalva maneuver: A valsalva maneuver measures your blood pressure. Like the deep breathing test, we place electrodes on your chest and a blood pressure cuff on your finger. To record your blood pressure, you will breathe out through a mouthpiece while your nose is pinched shut.
- Tilt table test: A tilt table test measures your heart rate and blood pressure as you switch your posture. The main purpose is to determine the cause of dizziness or fainting. You lie down on a motorized table on your back with straps to keep you in place. Dr. Jaligam tilts the table 30 degrees for a few minutes. Then he tilts it 45 degrees for a few minutes. Finally he shifts your position to almost entirely upright for 45 minutes.
- Quantitative Sudomotor Axon Reflex Test (QSART): A QSART measures how the nerves that manage your sweat glands function. Dr. Jaligam places electrode pads on the treatment areas (foot, wrist, and leg). You remove your socks and shoes and can lie or sit on the exam table. We send a slight electrical current into the pads, creating a warm tingling sensation. This process allows us to study how your nerves and glands respond to the electrical current.
